OPA to receive water billing credit

The following is a release from Worcester County Commissioner Chip Bertino:

(June 8, 2026) As a result of the County Commissioners’ decision to recalculate commercial water bills impacted by the rate formula adjustments put in place July 2025 the Ocean Pines Association will receive a credit of just over $15,000 in its July statement.

Moving forward commercial billing will be correctly calculated on total ratepayer EDU ownership.

The County’s usage fee tiers, for the service areas where it controls the water and wastewater plants, has a fee of $5 per 1,000 gallons used, up to the quarterly allocation, and any usage beyond the quarterly allocation would be charged a fee of $15 per 1,000 gallons used.

In fiscal year 2026, the current budget year, customers with multiple EDUs jumped into the $15 per 1,000-gallon tier based on exceeding quarterly the flow of one EDU, regardless of how many EDUs they owned.

On Tuesday, the Commissioners approved a plan that scales usage fee tiers based on how many EDUs a customer owns.

Additionally, the Commissioners approved a plan that credits multiple-EDU owners after calculating their FY2026 usage on the FY27 corrected rate structure. This credit will apply to multiple EDU owners across the 11 water service areas.
