Maryland Coastal Bays Program Celebrates 30 Years of Conservation, Community, and Coastal
Monday, June 29, 2026
L-R: past Executive Director Dave Wilson, current Executive Director Eva DiDonato, past Executive Directors Dave Blazer, Steve Taylor, and Frank Piorko
The following is a news release from Maryland Coastal Bays:
(June 29, 2026) Some of the original architects, former directors, staff, and partners of the Maryland Coastal Bays Program gathered at Macky's Bayside Bar & Grill on June 24 to celebrate the program's Pearl Anniversary—30 years of protecting and restoring the five Coastal Bays behind Ocean City and Assateague Island. Fittingly, the celebration took place on the very same date and at the very same location where the program's remarkable journey first began.
Like a pearl, formed through years of patience and perseverance, each layer of collaboration, discovery, and dedication has contributed to the success story celebrated today. Thirty years ago, the future of these treasured waters was uncertain. Rapid development, increasing tourism, and mounting environmental pressures were beginning to take a toll on this fragile ecosystem. Excess nutrients fueled harmful algal growth, critical habitats declined, and fish and wildlife populations showed signs of stress. Residents, watermen, scientists, and conservationists recognized that both the environment and the coastal way of life they cherished were at risk. From that concern emerged a vision—and a commitment to action.
Senator Mary Beth Carozza attended the celebration and presented on behalf of the entire Senate of Maryland Membership recognition of the programs’ 30 dedicated years protecting and conserving the Maryland Coastal Bays and Watershed alongside farmers, businesses, nonprofits, and the community.
What began as the efforts of a small group of passionate individuals has grown into a nationally recognized partnership of citizens, scientists, educators, businesses, and policymakers working together toward a common goal: healthy coastal waters that support thriving communities, vibrant wildlife, and future generations.
The story of the Maryland Coastal Bays is one of resilience and renewal. Over the past three decades, restoration projects, scientific research, environmental education, habitat protection, and community engagement have demonstrated that meaningful change is possible when people come together. The bays that once faced serious challenges now support flourishing habitats, cleaner waters, and countless opportunities for recreation and enjoyment. Their recovery stands as a powerful reminder that conservation works.
To commemorate this milestone anniversary, MCBP will host a series of special events throughout the summer, culminating in An Evening on the Estuary, a signature gala set against the breathtaking backdrop of Assateague State Park.
Overlooking the sparkling waters of Sinepuxent Bay, guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening featuring exceptional local cuisine, a raw bar showcasing shellfish harvested from the Coastal Bays, live music, dancing, a silent auction, and the opportunity to celebrate three decades of environmental achievement alongside friends, supporters, and community leaders. As the sun sets over one of Maryland's most spectacular coastal landscapes, attendees will help support the next chapter of conservation in our watershed.
Tickets for An Evening on the Estuary and information about additional anniversary events can be found at
