Worcester County Health Department summer programs & services

The following appeared in the summer 2026 Ocean Pines Report quarterly newsletter:

Summer Sun Safety
Living on the beautiful Eastern Shore, our residents are more vulnerable to extreme heat.
Here are some tips for keeping cool this summer:
● Limit your outdoor activity, especially midday (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.) when the sun is hottest.
● Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more. Muscle cramping may be an early sign of heat-related illness.
● Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
● Always use sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
● Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
● Never leave children or pets in cars.
● Keep humidity in mind - When the humidity is high, sweat won’t evaporate as quickly. This keeps your body from releasing heat as fast as it may need to.
Remember, those who are at highest risk include people 65 and older, children younger than two, and people with chronic diseases. Take these measures to stay cool, hydrated, and healthy this summer.
Free Adult Vaccines Available Through Maryland Vaccine Program
Vaccines are an important way to protect yourself, your family, and your community from a range of infectious diseases. The Maryland Vaccine Program (MVP) is a new initiative that ensures all Marylanders have access to life-saving immunizations.
The MVP provides vaccines free-of-charge to adults aged 19 years and older who are:
● Uninsured individuals who do not have health insurance.
● Underinsured individuals who have health insurance but still face barriers to immunization (e.g., insurance doesn’t cover vaccines or there is a high copay for vaccines)
The MVP provides vaccines recommended by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) which includes HPV, Meningococcal, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Influenza, COVID-19 vaccines, and more. Vaccines are currently available at the Worcester County Health Department. Call

Bring the family together with Worcester Health’s Strengthening Families Program
This free 9-week Program is for the whole family! Parents and guardians (with children aged 7 to 17) will learn to improve behaviors in their children by using positive attention and rewards, clear communication, effective discipline, age appropriate substance abuse education, problem solving and limit setting. Children get to learn effective communication, understanding of feelings, social and problem solving skills, how to resist peer pressure, age appropriate consequences of substance use, and following household rules.
