A. No. The shoulders on Ocean Parkway are not designated bike lanes, which have specific width requirements and must be clearly marked as such. The lines on Ocean Parkway designate an extended shoulder. Riders are asked to be aware of vehicles that may be parked on the side of the road and on these shoulders.
Q. Does it matter in which direction I ride my bike?
A. Yes. Bikes should always ride in the direction of traffic, on the right side of the road as practicable and safe.
Q. If I’m riding a bike, do I have to stop at stop signs and red lights?
A. Yes. By Maryland law, bicycles are vehicles and have the same rights-of-way and the same duty to obey all traffic signals and laws as motorists.
Q. As a motorist, is there anything I need to be aware of when encountering bicyclists on the road?
A. Yes. Motorists should always drive carefully near bicyclists, who are less visible, quieter and less protected than motorists. According to Maryland law, the driver of a vehicle must not pass any closer than 3 feet of a bicycle if it’s being operated in a lawful manner. (It is not lawful for bicyclists to ride against traffic.) Additionally, the bicycle has the right-of-way when the motor vehicle is making a turn, and motorists must yield to bicyclists.
Q. Does Ocean Pines offer bicycle helmets for kids?
A. Yes! The Ocean Pines Police Department has free bicycle helmets available in children’s sizes. Maryland law requires that all those under the age of 16 who ride their bicycles on the road, bicycle paths or any public property wear a helmet.
Q. My kids are interested in biking on trails. Is there a place in Ocean Pines to practice?
A. Yes! Bainbridge Park, located in north Ocean Pines off Sandyhook Road, has .6 miles of trails that are perfect for children, or anyone interested in trying singletrack riding. The trails have an average grade of 1% and a maximum grade of 3%.

A. Yes! The Worcester County Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition is a community organization dedicated to addressing and improving safety and access for cycling in and around Worcester County and works to promote and expand safe biking routes and events for residents and visitors.
